Distinguished and Famous people from The Sunshine Coast

🏄 Julian Wilson

Julian Wilson grew up about a hundred metres from the beach at Coolum, with surfing and skateboarding sharing his attention. That combination helped shape an inventive surfing career which reached the Championship Tour and a Pipe Masters victory. His willingness to experiment extended to trying skateboard-style rail manoeuvres on a surfboard in a wave pool. After stepping away from full-time tour competition in 2021, he placed more emphasis on family and his Rivvia Projects brand. The documentary Aurora Australis returned to that next chapter, including longboarding on the Sunshine Coast: a familiar pleasure behind a career often measured in contest results.

🛶 Grant Kenny

Grant Kenny's Sunshine Coast sporting story began with nippers and developed through Alexandra Headland's cadet and junior ranks. His junior and senior Ironman double at Maroochydore in 1980 made him a national name at sixteen. Olympic kayaking became another outlet for the paddling skills developed in the surf. The Sunshine Coast Paddlesports Club records his Olympic appearances in 1984 and 1988 among its history of international representation. It is a career connecting beach-based club training with the very different demands of racing a kayak on flat water.

🐄 John James “Jack” Ahern

John James “Jack” Ahern was born at Connemara in the Conondale district near Maleny, and returned after schooling to take over the family property. His work combined dairy farming with an eye for practical improvement: he developed his Jersey herd, used artificial insemination and worked with researchers on pasture development. Timber from Connemara also supplied part of the Hornibrook Highway bridge linking Brisbane with the Redcliffe Peninsula. Ahern later contributed to dairy-industry organisations and an advisory committee whose recommendations supported improved pastures. The story brings together cattle, scientific farming and a surprisingly substantial bridge-building connection.

🎹 Albert Arlen

Composer Albert Arlen and his wife, performer and lyricist Nancy Brown, retired to Maroochydore after long careers in music and theatre. Their best-known collaboration, The Sentimental Bloke, had begun with their own Canberra production in 1961 before a successful professional tour. Albert composed, while Nancy’s contribution drew on an established stage career and their shared struggle to bring new musicals to audiences. His other work included piano pieces with titles as varied as Requiem for a Siamese Cat and Spinnakers: A Sketch of Sydney Harbour. Maroochydore belongs to their later home life, rather than the birthplace of those earlier productions.

🔬 William Bryden

William Bryden moved to Buderim in 1983 after a career combining genetics, teaching and museum leadership. As director of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery he had reorganised displays and overseen expansion, while also holding roles in scientific societies and theatre. Earlier school leadership included taking students on natural-history field trips to central Australia. His later home was at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, where he lived until his death in 1992. The connection is an explicitly recorded later home, following the professional work for which he was known.
